Position Overview

The VP of Broadcast Sales will be the senior executive responsible for selling all broadcast, streaming, and media rights for the league. Reporting to the Chief Revenue Officer, you will lead negotiations with major networks (ESPN, NBC, Fox, CBS), streaming platforms (Amazon, Apple, Netflix, YouTube), regional sports networks, and international broadcasters to secure media rights deals that drive billions in revenue.

This role requires a unique combination of media rights expertise, negotiation prowess, creative deal structuring, and relationship building at the highest levels of the sports media industry.

Compensation Package: $1,200,000 total compensation

  • Base Salary: $650,000
  • Performance Bonus: $300,000 (target, tied to media rights revenue and deal closures)
  • Equity Grant: $250,000 annually (vesting over 4 years)

Key Responsibilities

1. National Media Rights Strategy & Sales

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute comprehensive national media rights strategy across linear, streaming, and digital platforms
  • Revenue Targets:
    • Year 1: Secure $866M in national media rights commitments
    • Year 3: Scale to $2.5B+ annually
    • Year 6: Achieve $5.2B+ annually (rivaling major professional leagues)
  • Platform Strategy: Determine optimal distribution across:
    • Linear Networks: ESPN, NBC, Fox, CBS, Turner
    • Streaming Platforms: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Netflix, Peacock, Paramount+
    • Digital Platforms: YouTube, X (Twitter), Meta platforms
    • Hybrid Models: ESPN+, NBC Sports app, Fox Sports digital
  • Rights Packages: Create compelling, flexible packages including:
    • Tier 1 National Games: Primetime showcase games (500-750 games/year)
    • Tier 2 Regional Games: Regional windows and doubleheaders (1,500-2,000 games/year)
    • Tier 3 Digital/Streaming: Remaining games and niche sports (2,500+ games/year)
    • Championship Rights: Regional and national championship tournaments

2. Network & Platform Negotiations

  • Lead Negotiations: Conduct high-stakes negotiations with major media companies for multi-year, multi-billion dollar rights deals
  • Deal Structure: Structure innovative deals that may include:
    • Rights Fees: Guaranteed annual payments
    • Revenue Sharing: Percentage of advertising or subscription revenue
    • Equity Stakes: Potential equity investments from media partners
    • Production Commitments: Network production and promotion guarantees

  • Multi-Platform Deals: Negotiate comprehensive deals spanning linear, streaming, and digital
  • Exclusivity vs. Non-Exclusive: Strategically balance exclusive windows with multi-platform distribution
  • Term Length: Optimize deal terms (5-10+ years) to balance guaranteed revenue with future flexibility
  • Escalators: Build in annual escalators tied to audience growth, team expansion, and market conditions

3. Regional Sports Network (RSN) Sales

  • Regional Strategy: Develop strategy for regional broadcast rights across 4 league regions
  • RSN Partnerships: Negotiate with regional sports networks including:
    • Bally Sports networks
    • NBC Sports Regional Networks
    • NESN, YES Network, MSG, other local RSNs
    • Streaming regional alternatives (Marquee Sports Network model)
  • Regional Revenue Target: $150M-$300M annually from regional rights at scale
  • Market-Specific Deals: Customize packages for high-value markets (NYC, LA, Chicago, etc.) vs. smaller markets
  • Blackout Strategy: Navigate local blackout rules and streaming availability
  • Production Models: Determine whether networks produce games or league produces for distribution

4. Streaming & Digital Rights

  • Streaming-First Strategy: Build strategy for direct-to-consumer and streaming platform distribution
  • Platform Partnerships: Negotiate with streaming platforms including:
    • Amazon Prime Video (Thursday Night Football model)
    • Apple TV+ (MLS Season Pass model)
    • YouTube TV and YouTube (NFL Sunday Ticket model)
    • Peacock, Paramount+, Max, ESPN+
    • Emerging platforms (X, TikTok, others)
  • DTC Considerations: Evaluate league-owned streaming service vs. partner platforms
  • Digital Rights: Negotiate digital clip rights, highlight packages, and social media distribution
  • International Streaming: Secure international streaming deals for global distribution
  • Revenue Models: Negotiate subscription splits, pay-per-view options, or ad-supported models

5. International Broadcast Rights

  • Global Strategy: Develop strategy for international media rights across key markets
  • Target Markets:
    • Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain (strong Olympic sports following)
    • Latin America: Mexico, Brazil, Argentina (soccer, volleyball popularity)
    • Asia: Japan, South Korea, China (growing sports markets)

    • Digital Originals: Short-form content for social platforms
  • Production Quality: Set standards for broadcast production quality, commentary, graphics, and storytelling

  • Athlete Access: Coordinate with teams on athlete interviews, mic’d up segments, and exclusive content

7. Audience Development & Measurement

  • Viewership Strategy: Work with media partners to maximize audience growth and engagement
  • Measurement & Analytics: Track and analyze:
    • Linear TV ratings (Nielsen)
    • Streaming viewership metrics
    • Digital engagement (video views, completion rates, social metrics)
    • Audience demographics and psychographics
    • Market-by-market performance
  • Programming Optimization: Use data to inform scheduling, matchup selection, and promotional strategies
  • Attribution: Demonstrate ROI to media partners through viewership and engagement data
  • Research: Commission audience research to support rights valuations and renewals

8. Media Partner Relationships & Servicing

  • Partner Management: Serve as primary relationship owner with all broadcast and streaming partners
  • Executive Relationships: Build and maintain relationships with:
    • Network presidents and executives (ESPN, NBC Sports, Fox Sports, CBS Sports)
    • Streaming platform leadership (Amazon, Apple, Netflix, YouTube)
    • Programming and acquisitions teams
    • Sales and advertising leadership
  • Quarterly Business Reviews: Conduct regular performance reviews with media partners
  • Issue Resolution: Quickly address any partner concerns, production issues, or contractual matters
  • Renewal Strategy: Begin renewal discussions 2-3 years before expiration to maximize value
  • Expansion Opportunities: Identify opportunities to expand existing partnerships (new sports, new windows, new platforms)

9. Production Coordination & Quality

  • Production Standards: Set league-wide production standards for all broadcasts
  • Production Models: Determine production responsibility (network-produced vs. league-produced)
  • Crew & Talent: If league-produced, hire and manage production crews, directors, announcers, and analysts
  • Venue Coordination: Ensure venues are broadcast-ready with proper infrastructure (cameras, lighting, connectivity)
  • Technology Infrastructure: Coordinate on broadcast technology needs (fiber connections, satellite trucks, control rooms)
  • Quality Control: Monitor broadcast quality and viewer experience across all platforms

10. Team Building & Leadership

  • Build Sales Team: Recruit and lead broadcast sales and media partnerships team
  • Team Structure:
    • Year 1: 5-7 professionals (directors, managers, analysts)
    • Year 3: 10-12 professionals as deals scale and complexity grows
  • Roles: Build team including:
    • Director of National Media Sales
    • Director of Regional Media Sales

Required Qualifications

Experience:

  • 15+ years in sports media rights sales, programming, or distribution
  • 7+ years in senior media sales leadership roles (VP, SVP level)
  • Proven track record negotiating major media rights deals ($100M+ annually)
  • Direct experience with national sports media negotiations (leagues, conferences, major events)
  • Demonstrated success building and leading media sales teams

Media Rights Expertise:

  • Deep expertise in sports media rights valuation, negotiation, and deal structuring
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sports media landscape (linear, streaming, digital, international)
  • Strong understanding of advertising market, CPMs, and media economics
  • Experience with both traditional broadcast and emerging streaming platforms
  • Knowledge of production standards, broadcast technology, and content distribution

  • Exceptional negotiation skills with track record of closing complex, multi-year deals

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Business, Communications, Sports Management, or related field)

  • Major League Experience: Previous media rights role with NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, or major college conference
  • Network Experience: Work experience at ESPN, NBC Sports, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, or Turner Sports
  • Streaming Platform Experience: Experience with Amazon, Apple, Netflix, or other major streaming platforms
  • Olympic Sports: Knowledge of Olympic sports programming and audiences
  • College Sports: Experience with NCAA media rights or college sports broadcasting

Success Metrics – First 18 Months

First 90 Days:

  • Complete media rights strategy and market valuation analysis
  • Build initial broadcast sales team (3-5 hires)
  • Develop comprehensive rights packages (national, regional, digital)
  • Initiate conversations with top 10 media partners (ESPN, NBC, Amazon, Apple, Fox, CBS, YouTube, others)
  • Create detailed financial models for different deal scenarios
  • Establish media partnership evaluation criteria
  • Begin competitive landscape analysis (comparable leagues, rights deals, market trends)

Months 4-6 (Q2):

  • Issue formal RFP or begin exclusive negotiations with top media partners
  • Present comprehensive rights packages to 5-7 serious bidders
  • Negotiate term sheets with 2-3 finalists
  • Secure LOIs (letters of intent) from preferred partners
  • Begin production planning and infrastructure assessment
  • Coordinate with Legal on contract frameworks
  • Update CRO and board on negotiation status weekly

Months 7-12 (Q3-Q4):
